Responsibilities
- Own reference database architecture, including instance design, replication topology, parameter tuning, connection management, and query plan health.
- Define and govern schema conventions used across federal programs.
- Build reusable backup, restore, disaster-recovery, and zero-downtime migration tooling validated through production recovery drills.
- Own database security patterns covering encryption, least-privilege access, and audit logging inside FedRAMP boundaries.
- Partner with Platform Engineering and Data Engineering on shared infrastructure and production-to-analytics integration.
- Support program teams, carry portfolio-wide escalation on-call for database infrastructure, and participate in customer discussions about data posture.
Requirements
- 5+ years of production database engineering at scale with a major relational engine, preferably PostgreSQL or alternatively Aurora, MySQL, or Oracle.
- Strong query plan literacy, including the ability to read EXPLAIN ANALYZE output and reason about performance without a profiler.
- Production experience with zero-downtime schema migrations, at least one OLAP or analytics store, and AWS—particularly RDS or Aurora.
- Hands-on experience operating inside a FedRAMP Moderate or High boundary and familiarity with the database side of an ATO continuous-monitoring cycle.
- Experience creating database patterns, tooling, or standards consumed by teams beyond the immediate team.
- Strong customer-facing communication regarding data residency, retention, encryption, and access decisions.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance; an active clearance is preferred, with Secret minimum for most engagements and TS or TS/SCI for some engagements.
- Preferred experience includes row-store and column-store engines, Postgres logical replication, AWS DMS, vector storage, TDE, Vault, AWS KMS customer-managed keys, PostGIS, and IL5, IL6, or JWICS environments.
