Responsibilities
- Design and build low-level distributed services and runtimes for Nu’s global data platform.
- Lead compute orchestration framework design on large Kubernetes clusters to improve scheduling throughput and resource utilization.
- Design and optimize high-throughput streaming and storage architectures using Apache Kafka and distributed database internals.
- Identify and resolve performance, network, and storage bottlenecks across the infrastructure stack.
- Define internal APIs, developer toolchains, and data modeling practices with analytics engineering leads and platform users.
- Set standards for resilience testing, automated failover, observability, and architectural documentation.
- Write technical design proposals, align teams on complex technical decisions, and mentor engineers across squads.
Requirements
- Substantial experience designing, scaling, and operating mission-critical distributed systems and backend architectures in high-throughput production environments.
- Strong practical knowledge of container orchestration and systems management at scale, ideally including Kubernetes internals and custom controllers or operators.
- Advanced proficiency in a systems-oriented language such as Go, Java, Scala, Rust, or C++.
- Experience with database system architecture, including storage engines, indexing, and replication, and/or event-driven architectures using Apache Kafka.
- Track record of technical leadership through design proposals, complex technical decisions, and engineering mentorship.
- Experience building internal developer platforms, custom compute engines, or low-level database products is preferred.
- Experience with data platforms or compute runtimes supporting production AI/ML training and inference is preferred.
- Familiarity with multi-region AWS networking, security, IAM, and compute is preferred.
- Involvement in open-source distributed systems projects such as Kubernetes, Kafka, or data orchestration is preferred.
Benefits
- Base salary of €78,720–€98,400 gross per year, depending on experience and skills.
- Competitive Restricted Stock Unit package in addition to base salary.
- Berlin-based hybrid working model with two days per week in the office under Nu’s Back to Teams policy.
