Responsibilities
- Lead the development and adoption of architectural policies, principles, standards, and engineering practices.
- Provide technical leadership, assurance, and direction across complex programmes involving multiple teams, suppliers, and technology platforms.
- Shape whole-solution architectures covering applications, integration, data, infrastructure, cloud, security, operations, and user experience.
- Build relationships with senior customer stakeholders and influence architectural decisions across customers, delivery teams, suppliers, and internal teams.
- Advise customers on modern technologies, architectures, delivery approaches, legacy modernisation, and migration strategies.
- Contribute to account strategies, technology strategies, bids, proposals, estimates, assumptions, risks, and business development opportunities.
- Manage, coach, mentor, and develop architects, engineers, and other technical colleagues, including supporting performance and career development.
- Share knowledge and contribute to the wider architecture, engineering, technology, and public sector communities.
Requirements
- Extensive experience working in the public sector, ideally UK Government or other large public service organisations.
- Proven accountability for technology delivery challenges including large-scale services, multi-team programmes, digital transformation, and modernisation initiatives.
- Successful experience leading software and solution architectures for complex, multi-tiered modern applications and digital services.
- Engineering background with the ability to communicate with, assure, and provide technical leadership to software engineering teams.
- Experience with public cloud platforms such as AWS and Azure, including SaaS, PaaS, containerised, and cloud-native architectures.
- Understanding of modern integration and data architecture, including APIs, event-driven architectures, data platforms, and interoperability between legacy and modern systems.
- Experience designing services with demanding security, resilience, performance, scalability, availability, accessibility, operability, and maintainability requirements.
- Experience with public sector governance, assurance, Government Service Standard, Technology Code of Practice, accessibility requirements, and relevant security principles.
- Ability to communicate complex technical designs clearly and influence senior and C-level stakeholders, customers, suppliers, and delivery teams.
- Understanding of security, privacy, information management, commercial implications, total cost of ownership, supplier dependency, and long-term sustainability.
- Experience managing, coaching, and developing technical colleagues and contributing to wider capability growth.
- Desirable qualifications include UK Central Government or major public sector programme experience, Government Digital Service assessments, government security standards, secure-by-design principles, major cloud partners, technology strategy, architecture governance, reusable patterns, and responsible adoption of Generative AI, agentic AI, automation, and modern data platforms.
