Responsibilities
- Lead system design for cross-cutting and high-risk work and write ADRs that engineering teams follow.
- Partner with application squads to create durable, scalable designs and provide technical direction across the organization.
- Own production reliability, including monitoring, alerting, on-call practices, incident diagnosis, remediation, and postmortems.
- Design, provision, and operate highly available AWS infrastructure using Terraform and Kubernetes while managing cost.
- Build and improve CI/CD pipelines and validation gates for human- and agent-generated changes.
- Maintain runbooks, AGENTS.md, and other technical context that helps engineers and AI tools understand system topology and operational constraints.
- Provide mentorship and drive adoption of architectural patterns across teams without direct management authority.
Requirements
- Senior experience designing and operating distributed systems in production with ownership of overall system behavior.
- Strong software engineering and computer science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, and system design.
- Ability to work deeply in application and backend code as well as infrastructure.
- Strong architectural judgment around durability, extensibility, robustness, observability, scalability, and tradeoffs.
- Hands-on experience with AWS, networking, production Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform, and Infrastructure as Code.
- Practical observability experience with Grafana, Prometheus, CloudWatch, monitoring, and alerting.
- Calm, methodical incident-response and root-cause-analysis skills.
- Strong communication and influence skills for driving adoption across teams.
- Experience using AI coding agents such as Claude Code or Cursor and a perspective on reviewing and trusting their output.
- Bonus experience with Elixir, Erlang, BEAM, OTP, Kafka, RabbitMQ, ClickHouse, Broadway, high-availability systems, CI/CD, cloud cost optimization, technical leadership, or agent-generated change controls.
