Responsibilities
- Own availability, recoverability, and performance for the SQL Server estate.
- Inventory SQL Server instances, editions, licensing, sizes, growth rates, dependencies, schedules, and consumers.
- Validate backup strategies, perform scheduled test restores, and report Recovery Point and Recovery Time Objective results.
- Manage high availability, failover exercises, log shipping, and transactional replication.
- Lead database-layer incident response, mitigation, communications, post-incident reviews, and corrective actions.
- Own disaster recovery and contingency planning, including annual DR exercises.
- Administer and extend SSIS packages and SSRS reports, and develop SSIS, T-SQL, and stored procedures.
- Automate provisioning, patching, maintenance, integrity checks, backup verification, and environment refreshes.
- Build telemetry and alerting for data quality, job durations, wait statistics, blocking, deadlocks, storage growth, and cost.
- Create operational runbooks, manage database-layer access and encryption controls, and maintain patching currency.
- Serve as the technical authority for the SQL Server estate, participate in design reviews, and flag risks early.
- Mentor engineers and analysts, cross-train a colleague, and participate in a shared 24x7 on-call rotation.
Requirements
- 10+ years of production database engineering experience, including operational ownership of a 24x7 environment.
- Deep SQL Server 2016+ experience with Always On availability groups, failover clustering, transactional replication, advanced T-SQL, execution plans, and indexing strategy.
- Experience running SQL Server in AWS using RDS, RDS Custom, or EC2, including at least one on-premises-to-cloud migration.
- Experience managing SQL Agent jobs and automating database operations with PowerShell and/or Python.
- Experience maintaining legacy SSIS packages and SSRS reports and operating at multi-terabyte scale.
- Experience with backup and recovery validation, performance tuning, disaster recovery, incident response, observability, and database access and encryption controls.
- Strong proactive communication and ability to work with engineering, analytics, finance, leadership, and other stakeholders.
- Preferred experience migrating or retiring legacy Microsoft BI assets into a modern cloud data platform.
- Preferred familiarity with AWS DMS, Snowflake, dbt, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Aurora, Azure SQL, post-acquisition integration, or property technology, mortgage technology, or fintech.
