Responsibilities
- Perform deep performance investigations using telemetry, ETW traces, profiling, critical-path analysis, and system-level debugging.
- Analyze large-scale telemetry and trace data to identify regressions, attribute root causes to source code, and quantify improvement opportunities.
- Develop AI-powered performance engineering tools and analysis techniques using performance data, traces, profiling results, source code, and engineering context.
- Design workloads, benchmarks, baselines, and experiments to compare performance across Windows releases, silicon platforms, devices, and alternative platforms.
- Investigate resource efficiency and performance across device classes, hardware configurations, and memory-constrained systems.
- Develop and validate optimization hypotheses, quantify tradeoffs, and partner with component owners to deliver measurable improvements.
- Collaborate with engineering teams, OEMs, silicon vendors, IHVs, and ISVs on complex investigations spanning hardware, firmware, drivers, operating systems, and applications.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field and 4+ years of technical engineering experience with coding, or equivalent experience.
- Demonstrated software engineering, debugging, systems-analysis, performance-analysis, profiling, telemetry, diagnostics, or benchmarking experience.
- Ability to analyze complex technical data, form testable hypotheses, and translate findings into engineering actions.
- Knowledge of operating-system fundamentals such as thread scheduling, memory management, storage/I/O, synchronization, and resource management.
- Experience with Windows performance and diagnostic technologies such as ETW, WPR/WPA, WinDbg, or comparable tools.
- Experience with large-scale telemetry and data-analysis platforms, including Kusto or similar technologies.
- Experience designing performance workloads, benchmarks, experiments, and interpreting results across hardware, software, or operating-system configurations.
- Experience applying AI-assisted engineering tools to technical data, source code, traces, or complex engineering problems.
- Experience building analysis tools or automation that combines telemetry, profiling information, source code, and engineering context.
- Experience with statistical analysis and experimental methodology, including baselines, measurement quality, and variability analysis.
- Experience investigating problems across hardware, firmware, drivers, operating systems, and applications.
- Experience collaborating with OEMs, IHVs, ISVs, silicon partners, or other external engineering organizations.
Benefits
- The role is a full-time U.S. position with a stated base-pay range of USD $119,800–$234,700 per year, with a separate range for specified San Francisco Bay Area and New York City metropolitan locations.
- Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation, with additional information provided by Microsoft.
