Base Salary

$120k - $261k/yr

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and evolve services and APIs powering Outlook experiences at global scale.
  • Solve distributed-systems challenges involving reliability, performance, scalability, and fault tolerance.
  • Own features and services end to end, including technical design, implementation, testing, rollout, monitoring, and improvement.
  • Write maintainable, well-tested code and modernize existing systems through architectural improvements.
  • Use telemetry, experimentation, and customer feedback to identify problems and measure customer impact.
  • Build security, privacy, and compliance into service design and implementation.
  • Participate in production operations and incident response and drive improvements that prevent recurrence.
  • Partner across Outlook and Microsoft 365 to define API contracts, manage dependencies, and deliver cohesive customer experiences.
  • Improve engineering productivity through automation, tooling, and simpler development processes.
  • Contribute through design discussions, code reviews, knowledge sharing, and inclusive engineering practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related technical field and 4+ years of technical engineering experience coding in languages including C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python, or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including the Microsoft Cloud background check.
  • Preferred: 5+ years of software engineering experience designing, implementing, and shipping production software.
  • Preferred: experience developing backend services using C# or another object-oriented programming language.
  • Preferred: experience building distributed systems, cloud services, or web services.
  • Preferred: experience operating large-scale production services, including monitoring, incident response, and reliability improvements.
  • Preferred: experience designing APIs and improving latency, throughput, scalability, and resource efficiency.
  • Preferred: familiarity with secure development practices, automated testing, and safe deployment strategies.
  • Preferred: ability to make pragmatic technical tradeoffs and drive work across team boundaries.

Benefits

  • The typical U.S. base pay range is $119,800-$234,700 per year, with a separate San Francisco Bay Area and New York City metropolitan area range of $160,200-$261,000 per year.
  • Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation.
  • The Microsoft Cloud background check is required upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.
  • The position is open for at least 5 days, with applications accepted on an ongoing basis until filled.
