Responsibilities
- Design, build, and evolve Wise’s internal cloud-based database platform.
- Lead automation initiatives for database migrations, upgrades, provisioning, backups, and failure recovery.
- Embed encryption, authentication, RBAC, network controls, and other security and compliance controls into platform components.
- Own the availability, reliability, performance, and security of production database platform systems.
- Collaborate with product teams, SREs, and DBAs to establish platform guardrails for database technology adoption.
- Lead incident resolution, post-incident reviews, escalation support, and on-call activities.
- Mentor and coach engineers, support onboarding, reduce single points of failure, and contribute to hiring.
- Influence technical and product roadmaps and represent the team in cross-tribe engineering initiatives.
Requirements
- Significant platform engineering experience with senior ownership of production platform systems at scale.
- Experience with cloud infrastructure using AWS or GCP.
- Strong Python development skills or similar programming experience.
- Strong software engineering fundamentals, including secure, testable, and maintainable code.
- Proficiency with cloud APIs and DevOps tooling such as Terraform, Ansible, CI/CD, and Teleport.
- Experience leading or significantly contributing to incident response and post-incident improvements.
- Practical experience with distributed databases at scale, preferably YugabyteDB, or CockroachDB, TiDB, or Cloud Spanner.
- Deep operational expertise with distributed SQL systems in production.
- Experience or strong interest in migration patterns, automation, Database-as-a-Service platforms, or internal developer tooling.
- Experience leading migration strategy and execution and influencing technical or product roadmaps.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and ability to explain technical trade-offs, business impact, and customer value.
Benefits
- Starting salary of £87,500 - £111,000 plus RSUs.
