Backend Engineer (Ruby), AI Engineering: Agent Observability

Responsibilities

  • Develop, ship, and maintain secure, tested, and performant Agent Observability and interaction features across the GitLab monolith backend and AI gateway.
  • Collaborate with product management, UX, frontend, backend, and AI specialists to refine requirements and deliver product improvements.
  • Design, implement, and review GraphQL and REST APIs and related backend logic.
  • Improve automated testing, including RSpec and other testing frameworks.
  • Share engineering standards, patterns, and learnings related to responsible AI integration.
  • Participate in Tier 2 on-call rotations, troubleshoot production issues, perform root cause analysis, and improve observability and resiliency.

Requirements

  • Experience building and maintaining production applications with Ruby on Rails, including background jobs, APIs, and data models.
  • Experience designing or extending scalable, maintainable, and backward-compatible REST and/or GraphQL APIs.
  • Strong practical experience using AI tooling in daily workflows; experience shipping AI-powered backend features and integrations is a plus.
  • SQL skills and familiarity with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, including efficient queries and data modeling.
  • Familiarity with Python backends and/or Vue frontends is a plus.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in an async-first, distributed, remote, cross-functional environment.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, including technical proposals and documentation.
