Responsibilities
- Define technical strategy, priorities, and multi-quarter direction for Shopify’s privacy engineering domain.
- Architect and improve large-scale privacy infrastructure, including DSAR orchestration, PII redaction, consent management, compliance tooling, and privacy event pipelines.
- Solve multiple high-value technical problems in parallel, including redesigning petabyte-scale data processing systems.
- Drive coordination across Engineering, Legal, Compliance, Product, Data, and other organizational teams.
- Author foundational technical designs covering system boundaries, data models, and architectural patterns.
- Reduce complexity and operational toil while improving the cost, speed, and reliability of privacy infrastructure.
- Prototype and experiment with emerging approaches to address upcoming regulatory and technical needs.
- Mentor engineers and establish standards for technical excellence, code quality, system design, and operational practices.
Requirements
- Strong software engineering fundamentals, production coding ability, and high-quality system design skills.
- Hands-on experience building and optimizing large-scale data processing systems with measurable performance and cost improvements.
- Experience architecting and scaling high-throughput, real-time data systems handling millions of requests per day.
- Fluency integrating AI coding tools into daily engineering workflows.
- A track record of cross-functional influence across engineering, legal, compliance, and data platform teams.
- Experience driving multi-quarter technical strategy across teams.
- Experience mentoring engineers and improving team reliability practices.
- Experience or strong interest in building privacy-domain systems.
- Preferred experience with BigQuery, Bigtable, Kafka, or Flink.
- Preferred familiarity with GDPR, CCPA, privacy and compliance regulations, and regulated domains where correctness has legal consequences.
