Responsibilities
- Define technical strategy, priorities, and multi-quarter direction for Shopify’s privacy engineering domain.
- Architect and build scalable privacy infrastructure for DSAR orchestration, PII redaction, consent management, compliance tooling, and privacy-enforcing event pipelines.
- Solve multiple high-value problems in parallel, including petabyte-scale redaction and consent management architecture.
- Drive coordination across Engineering, Legal, Compliance, Product, Data, Identity, Data Platform, Data Governance, and Streaming Platform teams.
- Author foundational technical designs covering system boundaries, data models, and architectural patterns.
- Improve the long-term reliability, performance, scalability, and cost of privacy infrastructure.
- Prototype and experiment with emerging technologies and approaches ahead of regulatory and business needs.
- Mentor engineers, conduct technical reviews, and raise standards for code, architecture, and operational practices.
Requirements
- Strong software engineering fundamentals with production-grade coding and system design expertise.
- Hands-on experience building and optimizing large-scale data processing systems with measurable performance and cost improvements.
- Experience architecting and scaling high-throughput, real-time data systems handling millions of requests per day.
- Fluency with AI coding tools as part of a daily engineering workflow.
- A track record of cross-functional influence across engineering, legal, compliance, and data platform teams.
- Experience driving multi-quarter technical strategy across teams.
- Experience mentoring engineers and improving team reliability.
- Experience or strong interest in building privacy-domain systems.
- Preferred experience with BigQuery, Bigtable, Kafka, or Flink.
- Preferred familiarity with GDPR and CCPA and with translating privacy and compliance regulations into technical requirements.
- Preferred experience building systems in regulated domains where correctness has legal consequences.
- Candidates should be prepared to complete a live pair-programming interview using their own IDE.
