Responsibilities
- Lead the technical direction and architecture of a backend product line, including service boundaries, data modeling, storage choices, scalability, and roadmap development.
- Design multi-tenant, privacy-first data flows across services and environments while accounting for healthcare compliance.
- Build and evolve data-intensive asynchronous systems using distributed query and processing engines, workflow orchestration, messaging, and datastores such as Redis.
- Lead cross-team technical initiatives from design through rollout in partnership with Product, Infrastructure, and external partner teams.
- Integrate LLM-powered features, agentic workflows, retrieval, MCP tool integrations, grounded outputs, human approval, cost controls, and measurable quality practices.
- Establish standards for API design, code quality, testing, security, data privacy, observability, and responsible AI-assisted development.
- Design metrics, logging, tracing, and alerting; investigate production issues and lead blameless postmortems.
- Mentor senior and junior engineers through design reviews, code reviews, pair programming, documentation, forums, and internal talks.
Requirements
- 8+ years of backend engineering experience delivering large-scale distributed systems in production.
- Deep expertise in Java 17+ and the Spring ecosystem, including Spring Boot, Spring Data, JVM internals, concurrency, and performance tuning.
- Experience with relational, NoSQL, or analytical databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, Cassandra, or ClickHouse, including schema design and query optimization.
- Working knowledge of Redis beyond caching and its trade-offs at scale.
- Experience with big-data or analytical query engines such as Spark and data lake storage, or strong willingness to develop that expertise.
- Strong knowledge of microservices, REST and GraphQL API design, distributed systems fundamentals, consistency, idempotency, partitioning, and fault tolerance.
- Strong security fundamentals covering authentication, authorization, tenant isolation, injection prevention, and sensitive-data handling.
- Experience with messaging, streaming, workflow-orchestrated systems such as Kafka or Airflow, and resilient event-driven architectures.
- Experience with GCP or AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, and owning CI/CD pipelines.
- Practical AI engineering experience with LLM APIs, prompt and context engineering, agentic systems, RAG, MCP, and AI quality and reliability evaluation.
- Daily hands-on use of AI coding tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or Cursor, with appropriate human review judgment.
- Demonstrated ability to lead technical work across teams, influence without direct authority, mentor senior engineers, and communicate trade-offs to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Healthcare data platforms, data clean rooms, programmatic advertising, DSP/SSP, production LLM features, guardrails, AI cost and latency optimization, AI workload observability, Spark or Flink at scale, open-source contributions, technical writing, or speaking are preferred.
