Responsibilities
- Own the long-term technical roadmap for clinical ML systems, including model architecture and production deployment patterns.
- Lead build-versus-buy decisions involving custom development and foundation model APIs.
- Define safe healthcare rollout standards, including shadow testing, staged deployment, and human-in-the-loop workflows.
- Design and implement LLM-powered clinical agents for consultation summarization, clinical coding, and evidence-grounded recommendations.
- Build evaluation frameworks using real-world clinical datasets and establish clinical accuracy and safety standards.
- Develop production infrastructure for model and prompt versioning, guardrails, uncertainty quantification, cost optimization, and observability.
- Define online and offline performance strategies focused on healthcare professional satisfaction.
- Mentor Staff and Senior ML Engineers and Applied Scientists and raise technical standards across the organization.
- Lead cross-functional initiatives with Product, Medical Affairs, Legal, and Compliance teams.
- Translate clinical needs into research questions and production systems that improve patient outcomes and meet EU regulatory expectations.
Requirements
- 10+ years of experience in ML/AI and 3+ years at Staff+ or Principal level leading complex, multi-team technical initiatives.
- PhD in Computer Science, AI, Statistics, or a related field, or equivalent research experience.
- Deep expertise in at least two of clinical NLP, LLM fine-tuning and evaluation, automatic speech recognition, RAG systems, or reinforcement learning.
- Expertise in Python, PyTorch, Transformers, and vLLM or a similar inference system, with experience deploying ML systems in production on AWS or GCP.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to align diverse stakeholders and explain complex technical decisions.
- Preferred: publications at NeurIPS, ICLR, ACL, or medical informatics venues.
- Preferred: experience with GDPR, MDR, the EU AI Act, clinical data, or healthcare applications.
