Responsibilities
- Own feature areas or components end to end, including technical direction, design, implementation, testing, documentation, release, and post-release health.
- Design and review integration and protocol interfaces that customers can extend and customize without forking the product.
- Define versioning and backward-compatibility strategies for public contracts and enforce them through design and code reviews.
- Design for failure and scale across rate limits, timeouts, partial responses, unavailable remote systems, high throughput, and long-running operations.
- Investigate escalated customer integration failures across the platform, network, and remote systems, driving root-cause fixes and preventive improvements.
- Identify and reduce technical debt, performance bottlenecks, and reliability risks.
- Mentor IC1 and IC2 engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and pairing, while establishing quality standards for testing and documentation.
- Collaborate with product management, user experience, quality engineering, and adjacent platform teams on scope and delivery sequencing.
Requirements
- 5+ years of software engineering experience owning backend systems or production services.
- Expert-level Java or JavaScript/Node.js skills and strong computer science fundamentals, including concurrency, memory management, and performance profiling.
- Experience designing, consuming, and debugging integrations with third-party systems, including undocumented or inconsistent behavior.
- Strong knowledge of OAuth 2.0, JSON Web Tokens, mutual TLS, and API key authentication flows.
- Experience designing APIs or extension points with versioning and backward-compatibility requirements.
- Production experience with debugging and root-cause analysis across system boundaries.
- Experience with data modeling, SQL, query optimization, indexing, and large datasets.
- Experience using automated testing and improving test strategy for a team.
- Experience mentoring engineers and leading technical design discussions.
- Experience with Agile, sprint-based development and clear technical writing, including design documents and technical decision records.
- Preferred experience with JSON-RPC, WebSockets, Server-Sent Events, streaming or long-lived connections, AWS EKS, Azure Kubernetes Service, Google Kubernetes Engine, Model Context Protocol, tool or function calling, agent-facing API design, JDBC, ODBC, database connectivity, query engine internals, platform or developer-facing products, SDKs, connectors, integration frameworks, and React or a comparable frontend framework.
- ServiceNow platform scripting and Flow Designer spoke development experience is preferred, though candidates may ramp quickly.
