Responsibilities
- Define and own the technical architecture for the Identity squad’s authentication systems, including the edge authentication redesign.
- Lead the design and implementation of large-scale, multi-quarter initiatives spanning critical user-interaction paths, services, and teams.
- Spend approximately 55% of time on backend development in Go, 25% on technical leadership and cross-team collaboration, and 20% on operations and reliability.
- Mentor senior engineers through technical guidance, design feedback, and professional development support.
- Act as Grafana’s technical authority for OAuth, OIDC, SAML, LDAP, and SCIM identity protocols.
- Drive cross-team alignment on authentication standards, patterns, and engineering best practices.
- Represent Grafana Labs at meetups and conferences and contribute to the identity and authentication community.
Requirements
- Deep expertise in distributed-systems engineering with Go and experience owning large-scale production systems end to end.
- Experience defining technical direction, making architectural decisions independently, and influencing beyond the immediate team.
- Extensive experience building and operating low-latency, high-throughput services in distributed, multi-tenant environments.
- Proven ability to lead complex, multi-quarter initiatives spanning multiple teams or systems.
- Experience mentoring and developing senior engineers.
- Strong understanding of SLOs, SLIs, error budgets, reliability, security, and product velocity tradeoffs.
- Excellent written and verbal English communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
- Expert understanding of OAuth 2.x/2.1, OIDC, SAML, and modern identity threat models, including secure implementation at scale.
- Familiarity with Kubernetes, TypeScript, React, OpenFGA, KiFederate IDP, open-source projects, or Grafana, Prometheus, and OpenTelemetry is beneficial.
