Base Salary
$143k - $190k/yr
Responsibilities
- Define and drive strategic direction for backend and full-stack engineering practices, architecture, and technical excellence.
- Lead development of scalable, reliable, and secure distributed systems serving government customers.
- Serve as the technical authority for system architecture, data design, engineering excellence, and infrastructure initiatives.
- Design and implement service architectures, data pipelines, shared libraries, service frameworks, and infrastructure patterns.
- Deliver features across customer intake, application screening, and information dissemination services.
- Lead modernization and large-scale technical initiatives that improve system quality, performance, maintainability, and team velocity.
- Establish engineering standards for API design, data modeling, testing, observability, security, and code quality.
- Mentor and coach engineers and build organizational backend engineering capability.
- Lead cross-functional initiatives and communicate architectural decisions and strategic vision to technical and business stakeholders.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of related experience and a demonstrated record of delivering multiple production-ready, scalable distributed systems.
- Experience architecting and implementing high-throughput microservice architectures and distributed system patterns such as event-driven architectures, asynchronous processing, caching, and data consistency.
- Experience designing and implementing customer-facing APIs, including REST or GraphQL APIs.
- Experience leading modernization from monoliths or legacy systems to modern stacks and establishing backend engineering standards.
- Experience with observability, monitoring, alerting, structured logging, metrics, tracing, and incident response.
- Familiarity with cloud-native architectures, infrastructure as code, deployment patterns, relational and NoSQL databases, data modeling, migrations, and data governance.
- Strong proficiency in modern programming languages such as Java or Python and understanding of distributed systems, reliability, performance, capacity, and cost optimization.
- Experience with automated unit, integration, contract, and end-to-end testing; CI/CD pipelines; security scanning; and deployment strategies.
- Experience with container orchestration, infrastructure as code, message brokers, event streaming platforms, API versioning, backward compatibility, and disaster recovery.
- Understanding of authentication, authorization, encryption, secrets management, and secure coding practices.
- Demonstrated ability to lead organization-wide technical initiatives, mentor engineers, make architectural decisions, and communicate with engineers, product managers, executives, and external stakeholders.
- Must be a US citizen and able to obtain and maintain Public Trust 6C.
