Responsibilities
- Set the technical direction and architecture strategy for the data access layer.
- Design and build core data architecture focused on scalability, reliability, security, and performance.
- Own cross-team features from design through delivery and translate business requirements into architectural solutions.
- Lead design and code reviews across multiple teams.
- Define functional, regression, integration, and performance testing strategies.
- Diagnose and resolve complex production issues involving memory leaks, concurrency, locking, networking, and intermittent failures.
- Mentor engineers at all levels and raise engineering quality standards.
- Author design documents and RFCs and present technical strategy to senior engineering leadership.
Requirements
- 12+ years of software development experience with a bachelor’s degree, 8+ years with a master’s degree, 5+ years with a PhD, or equivalent work experience.
- Demonstrated technical leadership at the Staff or Senior Staff level or equivalent.
- Expert-level Java development experience.
- Advanced to expert-level backend platform development experience.
- Expert understanding of object-oriented and modularized software design, especially in Java.
- Experience with relational databases including PostgreSQL, Oracle, MySQL, and Trino.
- Strong knowledge of data structures, algorithms, object-oriented design, design patterns, and performance optimization at scale.
- Experience with automated testing frameworks such as JUnit, Selenium, or TestNG and integrating tests into CI/CD pipelines.
- Deep understanding of software quality principles, reliability, observability, and production readiness.
- Understanding of cloud-based and distributed systems.
- Ability to learn new technologies quickly and deliver complex cross-team projects with quality.
- Experience troubleshooting difficult production issues across the stack.
- Track record of influencing architecture and engineering decisions across multiple teams without direct authority.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Familiarity with the ServiceNow platform, RDBMS internals, Neo4J, graph databases, Unix shell, DevOps environments, or customer-focused environments is preferred.
- Experience critically considering or integrating AI into engineering work is preferred.
