Responsibilities
- Lead architecture, design, development, and evolution of large-scale backend systems, APIs, distributed systems, and platform capabilities.
- Develop technical strategies and influence architecture, engineering standards, roadmaps, and technical investments across multiple teams and domains.
- Remain hands-on with complex implementations, prototypes, production problems, modernization, and technical-debt reduction.
- Champion responsible AI-assisted engineering, evaluate generative AI and agentic systems, and develop reusable AI-enabled tools and practices.
- Own service health, reliability, scalability, observability, production readiness, on-call participation, incident response, and root cause analysis.
- Drive secure coding, privacy, auditability, data governance, and compliance for sensitive payroll, tax, financial, and personally identifiable information.
- Mentor engineers, lead design and code reviews, conduct technical interviews, and promote engineering excellence and knowledge sharing.
- Partner with Product, Architecture, Compliance, Customer Support, SRE, operations, and engineering stakeholders to deliver customer-focused solutions.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
- 12+ years of professional software engineering experience, including significant experience designing and leading complex enterprise software systems.
- Deep expertise in Java and/or Python, with experience building scalable backend services, APIs, distributed systems, and enterprise applications.
- Strong knowledge of distributed-system architecture, design patterns, scalability, resiliency, concurrency, performance, data consistency, SQL, and data modeling.
- Hands-on experience with GCP, AWS, or Azure and distributed caching technologies such as Redis or Hazelcast.
- Strong experience with observability platforms including Grafana, Kibana, OpenTelemetry, or similar tools.
- Proven ability to lead technically complex, multi-team initiatives, develop technical strategy, and translate broad business outcomes into technical execution.
- Experience resolving complex production incidents, conducting root cause analysis, and driving preventive improvements.
- Strong understanding of DevOps practices, production operations, service ownership, secure software development, and sensitive customer-data handling.
- Hands-on experience applying AI-assisted development tools and workflows to engineering problems, plus the ability to mentor engineers and influence technical decisions.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder-influence, customer-orientation, independent judgment, and ability to operate in ambiguous, highly complex situations.
- Preferred qualifications include payroll, tax, HR, fintech, compliance, financial systems, regulated-domain, high-volume transaction-processing, cloud-native architecture, platform modernization, performance engineering, resilience-pattern, AI-agent, developer-productivity, and technical thought-leadership experience.
