Responsibilities
- Lead design and architecture for complex Datastore projects and systems.
- Design and scale PostgreSQL data models, Kafka-driven event pipelines, GraphQL APIs, and backend data infrastructure.
- Own dataset snapshot pipelines into the warehouse and develop integrations, services, and APIs for clinical and scientific workflows.
- Debug and profile ambiguous cross-system problems while improving structure, test coverage, tooling, and maintainability.
- Draft RFCs, lead technical discovery, incorporate stakeholder input, and guide implementation decisions.
- Plan individual and team work while balancing speed, generalizability, technical debt, and stakeholder needs.
- Mentor engineers, provide actionable feedback, and serve as a technical lead or engineering-practice coordinator.
- Improve operational robustness and usability through documentation, tools, and dashboards.
- Design and operate PostgreSQL systems, including schema evolution, migrations, replication, backups, connection pooling, vacuum behavior, and extensions.
Requirements
- 7+ years of backend development experience, including at least 3 years focused on data platforms and backend infrastructure for data-centric applications.
- Strong proficiency in SQL and production PostgreSQL, including schema design, indexes, query plans, query tuning, and EXPLAIN (ANALYZE).
- Deep expertise in at least one of data modeling, distributed systems, API design, or database engineering.
- Hands-on data streaming and event-processing experience with Kafka or an equivalent such as RabbitMQ, Pulsar, or Amazon Kinesis.
- Proficiency in Julia or Python; Julia experience is preferred but not required.
- Experience deploying and operating services in containerized environments, with familiarity with Kubernetes and Terraform and/or Helm.
- Track record of mentoring engineers and improving team practices, tooling, test coverage, or documentation.
- For the Datastore Systems focus, experience with GraphQL and TypeScript/JavaScript, including Node.js, plus end-to-end event-driven pipeline design.
- For the PostgreSQL & Data Modeling focus, expertise in query planning, index selection, schema design, zero-downtime migrations, lock avoidance, backfills, verification, and production PostgreSQL operations.
- Strong collaboration, communication, self-direction, and experience working in hybrid or fully remote teams.
- Experience with or interest in LLM-assisted or agentic coding tools in production, with sound judgment about guardrails.
