Responsibilities
- Own architectural direction for a significant portion of the HCM charter across multiple teams and services.
- Identify and resolve technical constraints affecting velocity, reliability, and customer experience.
- Define service boundaries, integration contracts, modernization strategies, migration paths, and risk-management plans.
- Own architecture for AI-powered and agentic capabilities, including shared services, retrieval and context patterns, orchestration, evaluation, guardrails, fallbacks, cost and latency budgets, and observability.
- Raise AI engineering practices across the charter through standards, tooling, forums, and measurable workflows.
- Multiply engineering effectiveness through design reviews, mentorship, technical unblocking, and cross-functional alignment.
- Drive systemic improvements in reliability, latency, security posture, operational toil, compliance, and root-cause resolution.
- Represent HCM technical strategy in architecture reviews and with senior engineering and product leadership.
- Contribute to hiring, leveling calibration, and assessment of senior and staff candidates.
- Remain hands-on through prototypes, reference implementations, foundational components, and critical-path engineering.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- At least 8 years of professional software engineering experience building and operating production systems at scale.
- Demonstrated Staff-level or equivalent experience setting technical direction across multiple teams.
- Deep expertise in distributed systems, service architecture, API design, and data modeling across relational and non-relational stores.
- Production depth in a modern backend language such as Java, Kotlin, Go, Python, Ruby, or Node.js, with working knowledge of a modern front-end framework, ideally React.
- Extensive experience with cloud infrastructure such as AWS or GCP, containerization, orchestration, and CI/CD at scale.
- Substantive production experience building AI systems, including LLM-backed features, retrieval-augmented architectures, or agentic workflows, with responsibility for quality and operational behavior.
- Experience changing how a team or organization works with AI-first engineering practices.
- Track record of completing large technical initiatives through influence rather than authority.
- Excellent technical writing and experience producing design or strategy documents that drove organizational decisions.
- Proven ability to mentor and grow senior engineers.
- Preferred experience includes HR technology, payroll, workforce management, fintech, rules engines, ledger-style systems, configurable workflows, live-system modernization, shared AI platforms, evaluation infrastructure, front-end architecture, privacy and security frameworks, and large matrixed organizations.
