Responsibilities
- Own backend payment flows covering initiation, partner routing, lifecycle states, webhooks, returns, recalls, and settlement tracking.
- Build partner integrations for new payment corridors, including banking and payment adapters, cut-off handling, calendar handling, and reconciliation hooks.
- Design reliable money-state systems with idempotency, safe retries, duplicate handling, graceful degradation, and exactly-once effects.
- Contribute to safeguarding flows, transaction monitoring pipelines, audit trails, and other regulated controls.
- Build payment tracking, status, reporting, and other dashboard views across API and GUI surfaces.
- Instrument payment success rates, stuck-payment detection, partner latency, and error rates.
- Collaborate with Product, Operations, Compliance, and senior engineers on product flows, API contracts, corridor architecture, prioritization, and adoption.
- Mentor L1/L2 engineers, provide code and design feedback, and drive technical-debt and engineering-excellence work.
- Participate in on-call, respond to incidents, and convert post-mortems into durable fixes.
Requirements
- 5–7 years of experience building production backend systems, primarily server-side and distributed systems.
- Payments or fintech experience building systems on a live payment or money path at a payments company, gateway, PSP, bank-facing fintech, or similar organization.
- Deep TypeScript and Node.js expertise and strong experience designing and operating APIs on complex systems.
- Strong PostgreSQL data modeling and query skills involving money state, transactional integrity, and high-volume correctness.
- Experience designing for idempotency, retries, partial failures, ordering, and duplicate handling.
- Hands-on experience integrating external partner APIs, including authentication schemes, certificates, webhooks, and sandbox-to-production differences.
- Experience with asynchronous processing through queues, jobs, or workflow engines.
- Experience writing automated backend tests, including integration tests against unreliable external dependencies.
- Working frontend proficiency with React and comfort working in a Next.js or similar codebase.
- Knowledge of object-oriented programming principles and low-level design patterns.
- Ability to scope ambiguous problems, work with high agency, communicate clearly in an async environment, and use data to guide decisions.
- Preferred experience with cross-border payments, FX, multi-currency systems, SWIFT or SEPA, double-entry ledgers, reconciliation at scale, regulated controls, Temporal or similar workflow engines, OpenTelemetry or similar observability tooling, and stablecoin or digital-asset rails.
