Responsibilities
- Lead backend development and maintain server-side logic for Mozilla Ecosystem Services.
- Own services end to end, including coding, deployment, production operations, monitoring, and reliability improvements.
- Maintain and improve production environments with CloudEng, including monitoring and alerting using OpenTelemetry, Sentry, Prometheus, and Grafana.
- Participate in on-call and off-hours support rotations to triage incidents, resolve production issues, investigate bug reports, and maintain service reliability.
- Handle releases, dependency updates, and incoming work requests from customer support and other stakeholders during periodic support rotations.
- Collaborate with frontend, platform, product, CloudEng, UX, design, and support teams on project goals, API design, backend systems, and data contracts.
- Participate in code reviews and security and privacy reviews.
- Mentor junior engineers and drive improvements in code quality, testing, and engineering processes.
- Apply AI-assisted development tools thoughtfully while maintaining engineering judgment.
Requirements
- At least 4 years of software development experience with a strong focus on backend technologies.
- Strong professional experience building backend services with Python, TypeScript/Node.js, or Rust, including confidence leading backend engineering projects.
- Proficiency with PostgreSQL, SQL query optimization, relational schema design, migrations, and a query builder such as Knex.
- Hands-on DevOps experience with Google Cloud Platform and Docker-based build and deployment pipelines.
- Experience deploying, operating, troubleshooting, and providing on-call or off-hours support for cloud services in production.
- Hands-on experience with observability and monitoring tools such as Sentry and Grafana.
- Strong engineering judgment, ownership, reliability focus, and ability to make pragmatic trade-offs.
- Experience mentoring junior engineers and improving code quality, testing, and processes.
- Preferred experience with performance or load testing, Terraform, Kubernetes, open-source contributions or personal engineering projects, and Django.
