Senior Software Engineer - Storefront Services Team

Base Salary
$116k - $195k/yr
Responsibilities
- Build and maintain features in the service powering BigCommerce storefronts, from requirements and technical design through production release.
- Extend GraphQL Storefront API queries and fields while maintaining backward compatibility for headless storefronts and third-party integrations.
- Evolve the storefront service to support AI-driven shopping agents and assistants that browse, build carts, and check out.
- Investigate and resolve production issues and improve service performance and reliability.
- Review teammates’ and partner teams’ code and develop design skills through design reviews and pairing with senior engineers.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience building backend services that run in production.
- Preferred minimum bachelor’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, software engineering, computer engineering, MIS, or equivalent experience.
- Production experience with Scala or Kotlin is preferred; backend experience in languages such as Java or Go with willingness to learn Scala is also considered.
- Experience translating stakeholder requirements into technical designs and delivering them to production.
- Working knowledge of HTTP fundamentals, including caching headers, cookies, sessions, and timeouts.
- Familiarity with GraphQL APIs, service-to-service communication, caching, automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, feature flags, and gradual rollouts.
- Experience debugging production issues using metrics, traces, and logs.
- Regular use and careful review of AI coding assistants, plus interest in how AI agents use APIs such as MCP and tool calling.
