Responsibilities
- Drive architecture, design, implementation, and delivery of secure, scalable backend services deployed on Kubernetes in a cellular, multi-AZ cloud architecture.
- Act as a technical leader across one or more teams and own end-to-end architecture for backend services and full-stack applications.
- Design authentication and authorization integrations, including session-based authentication and mTLS for service-to-service communication.
- Partner with Security on threat modeling, AppSec, vulnerability management, and AI safety guardrails.
- Define SLIs and SLOs, rollout strategies, and telemetry for pre-release, canary, and staggered deployments.
- Lead service ownership activities including on-call rotations, operational readiness reviews, runbooks, and automation.
- Set testing strategy across unit, integration, functional, regression, and performance testing, and approve cross-team test plans.
- Author architectural documents, design specifications, and test plans; lead design reviews and provide feedback on peer-team designs.
- Coach and mentor LMTS and SMTS engineers and determine which complex designs to delegate or implement directly.
- Manage the technical backlog, address technical debt, establish engineering standards, and represent the team to senior leadership, Product, customers, and external stakeholders.
- Champion customer trust, validate features with customers when needed, and lead critical problem management.
- Build production-grade software using AI-assisted development workflows, prompt engineering, shared system context, and code evaluation for quality, security, and performance.
Requirements
- 15+ years of professional software development experience and a record of shipping enterprise SaaS at scale in a Principal-level technical leadership capacity.
- Strong proficiency in Java and/or Python, with production-level fluency across multiple programming languages.
- Hands-on experience designing, operating, and evolving highly available distributed systems on AWS or comparable cloud platforms, including 99.99%+ availability targets.
- Experience with proactive threat modeling, AppSec, vulnerability management, security/compliance partnerships, and AI safety considerations.
- Experience with automated unit, integration, and functional testing, including JUnit, pytest, Selenium, and Playwright.
- Proven ability to lead technical initiatives across multiple teams, mentor engineers, and drive architectural alignment across organizational boundaries.
- Exceptional communication skills for presenting technical strategy and trade-offs to VP-level engineering leadership, Product, and external customers.
- Related technical degree.
- Experience using AI development tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Codex, or Cursor.
- Advanced prompt engineering skills and the ability to create structured prompts and reliable system context for production-ready AI outputs.
- Preferred: familiarity with multi-tenant SaaS, tenant isolation across database, cache, and storage layers, cloud platform engineering, LLMs and agents, ML model evaluation, Agile development, TDD, zero-downtime deployments, and business process management, process mining, or workflow automation.
- Preferred: prior Principal Engineer or similar experience driving major technical initiatives across multiple teams.

- The stated base salary range is $172,500-$313,700 annually, excluding bonus, equity, and benefits.
