Responsibilities

  • Establish enterprise integration design standards covering API design, message schemas, error handling, retries, idempotency, and versioning.
  • Architect event-driven and streaming integration patterns for clinical, operational, and analytical data exchange.
  • Lead healthcare interoperability architecture for HL7 FHIR, HL7 v2, X12 EDI, and CCDA.
  • Review integration code, message transformations, APIs, and pipeline designs while guiding implementation teams.
  • Define observability requirements including distributed tracing, message tracking, alerting, and structured logging.
  • Review major-program integration designs for security, scalability, soundness, and enterprise alignment.
  • Maintain an enterprise integration catalog documenting interfaces, owners, protocols, and dependencies.
  • Translate CMS, ONC, HIPAA, and other regulatory requirements into architecture and roadmap items.
  • Partner with Compliance, Legal, Data Governance, business stakeholders, and vendors on integration needs and assessments.
  • Lead requirements discovery, validate that delivered solutions reflect business intent, and participate in initiative planning and roadmaps.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • At least 12 years of progressive software engineering experience, including 3 years of hands-on integration development, 4 years of architectural accountability, and 4 years of project management experience.
  • Experience working in healthcare IT environments such as payer, provider, or health system organizations.
  • Experience integrating AI tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude, or ChatGPT into software development, documentation, or workflows.
  • Production experience building REST APIs, message-based integrations, ETL/ELT pipelines, or event-driven systems using Java, JavaScript, or Python.
  • Working knowledge of HL7 FHIR R4, HL7 v2, and X12 EDI healthcare transaction standards.
  • Familiarity with OAuth 2.0, SMART on FHIR, mTLS, API key management, and PHI-aware data handling.
  • Experience engaging business stakeholders, discovering requirements, and translating data exchange needs into integration architecture.
  • Proficiency with backend and frontend technologies and frameworks, database technology, and data modeling.
  • Strong communication, analytical, troubleshooting, and diagnostic skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Preferred experience with Linux, AIX, Windows, Oracle, SQL servers, Spring Boot, fastAPI, event-driven architecture, Kafka, Azure Integration Services, InterSystems HealthShare, or Rhapsody.
