Responsibilities
- Own the architecture for control-plane scalability, flex nodes, and the Unbounded platform while defining the multi-year AKS Flex technical roadmap.
- Lead cross-organization design efforts across AKS, Azure compute, storage, networking, and identity.
- Make architectural decisions covering correctness, durability, security, scale limits, and failure modes, and establish design and quality standards.
- Represent Microsoft in Kubernetes and Unbounded open-source communities, including SIG Scalability, SIG etcd, and SIG API Machinery.
- Mentor senior engineers and improve the technical capabilities of the broader team.
- Improve etcd and Kubernetes API server performance, reliability, and efficiency under large node counts and heavy workload churn.
- Design control-plane storage changes involving partitioning, offloading, and caching while preserving correctness and durability.
- Build scale-testing infrastructure, benchmarks, SLOs, and automation for etcd backup, restore, recovery, upgrades, and repair.
- Design and build secure node provisioning and day-two lifecycle automation across Azure regions, on-premises environments, edge locations, other clouds, and bare-metal fleets.
- Design Kubernetes-native APIs, controllers, and CRDs for declarative management of remote machines at fleet scale.
- Address remote-node latency, connectivity, heartbeat, identity, authentication, secure bootstrap, and heterogeneous hardware upgrade challenges.
- Participate in production operations and on-call rotations and contribute to secure, compliant, and resilient infrastructure.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related technical field and 6+ years of technical engineering experience with coding, or equivalent experience.
- Ability to pass Microsoft and customer or government security screening requirements, including the Microsoft Cloud Background Check.
- Preferred: master's degree and 8+ years of technical engineering experience, or bachelor's degree and 12+ years of technical engineering experience, or equivalent experience.
- Deep understanding of etcd internals, including Raft consensus, MVCC, watch mechanisms, compaction, defragmentation, bbolt, and operating etcd at scale.
- Deep understanding of storage systems and databases, including B-trees, LSM trees, write-ahead logging, replication, consistency models, transactions, and performance tuning.
- Experience with Kubernetes control-plane internals, including the API server, watch cache, controller patterns, API priority and fairness, and scalability limits.
- Experience with performance engineering, profiling, load testing, capacity modeling, and diagnosing production latency and throughput issues.
- Coding experience in one or more of Go, Rust, C++, C#, Java, or Python.
Benefits
- The typical U.S. base pay range is USD $142,800-$274,800 per year, with a separate San Francisco Bay Area and New York City metropolitan area range of USD $188,000-$304,200 per year.
- Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation.
- The position participates in production on-call rotations and requires the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.
- Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis until the position is filled, with the posting open for a minimum of five days.
