Responsibilities
- Build and evolve Nova’s query execution engine and distributed compute infrastructure, including query planning, columnar storage, encoding, compression, caching, and resource management.
- Design capabilities supporting additional warehouse-imported data types and sustained concurrent query workloads from AI agents.
- Reduce compute, storage, network, and memory costs while improving latency, throughput, and JVM performance.
- Build guardrails, observability, capacity-planning processes, rollout practices, and operational tooling to improve reliability.
- Participate in on-call rotations, investigate production incidents, and implement durable architectural fixes.
- Lead multi-month architecture and performance projects, contribute to design reviews and code reviews, mentor engineers, and drive cross-team technical alignment.
Requirements
- At least 7 years of industry experience in backend or infrastructure engineering with depth in distributed data systems.
- Hands-on experience building or significantly extending analytical or OLAP systems, query engines, columnar storage, or large-scale data-processing frameworks.
- Demonstrated success optimizing cloud infrastructure costs across compute, storage, and network resources at scale.
- Strong fundamentals in distributed systems, partitioning, replication, consistency, failover, data structures, algorithms, concurrency, multithreading, and performance optimization.
- Production experience with AWS services, Kafka, Redis or ElastiCache, Kubernetes, and Terraform, or strong equivalent technologies.
- Proficiency in Java, C++, or Python.
- Demonstrated technical influence through design leadership, cross-team alignment, and engineering mentorship.
- Preferred experience with Druid, ClickHouse, Presto or Trino, BigQuery, Snowflake, JVM tuning, columnar formats such as Arrow, Parquet, or ORC, product analytics, experimentation platforms, event-driven data systems, open-source data infrastructure, or published data-systems work.
