Responsibilities
- Deliver goals spanning a 6–18 month timeframe and help define the team’s 12-month roadmap
- Write well-tested, production-ready Rust code for distributed storage services
- Use the observability stack to guide decisions and measure the impact of shipped work
- Investigate performance regressions and guide complex performance and requirements tradeoffs
- Drive operational excellence and improve processes and tools for high-risk code changes
- Mentor engineers, conduct interviews, and share knowledge
- Apply database and distributed systems research from industry and academia
- Handle or lead responses to time-sensitive customer escalations
- Propose and advocate for cross-team projects connecting customer needs, company goals, and technical strategy
- Drive consensus on complex issues affecting multiple teams
- Participate in the one-week-in-six on-call rotation
Requirements
- 10+ years of experience programming, debugging, and performance tuning highly concurrent and/or distributed systems
- Significant experience with systems languages such as C, C++, or Rust
- Track record as an effective technical leader who can solve vaguely defined problems and work across team boundaries
- Strong understanding of cache management, log-based recovery, transactions, or performance profiling
- Ability to reason about concurrent asynchronous services, backpressure, tail latency, and replicated state machine failure modes
- Experience building or operating highly available, scalable, and performant systems such as databases, high-frequency trading platforms, or cloud storage services
- Excellent verbal and written technical communication skills
- Experience or interest in mentoring engineers and learning in computer science and software engineering domains
- Willingness to participate in a one-week-in-six on-call rotation
- Openness to occasional travel to the United States, approximately once per year
