Responsibilities
- Lead high-level performance investigations to identify and resolve systemic bottlenecks across JVM-based microservices.
- Reduce infrastructure costs and latency by tuning JVM parameters, garbage collection, heap, and off-heap memory.
- Build diagnostic and observability tooling using eBPF, JFR, and Flamegraphs.
- Optimize Linux kernel scheduling, JVM runtime behavior, cgroups, throttling, and resource isolation in Kubernetes environments.
- Design scalable infrastructure improvements that address long-term performance challenges.
- Diagnose concurrency issues, lock contention, race conditions, and memory leaks, delivering definitive fixes.
- Collaborate with the Computing Squad on orchestration and system performance strategies.
- Share JVM and performance expertise while mentoring engineers and promoting technical excellence.
Requirements
- Deep knowledge of JVM internals, including JIT compilation, class loading, and intrinsic methods.
- Extensive experience with ZGC, G1, and Shenandoah garbage collection algorithms, including tuning for large heaps and low latency.
- Deep understanding of the Linux Scheduler, including CFS and EEVDF, thread scheduling, and high-concurrency Java workloads.
- Mastery of heap and off-heap memory management, Direct Buffers, memory-mapped files, and complex memory leak diagnosis.
- Mastery of Flamegraphs, JFR, eBPF, and large-scale heap dump analysis.
- Extensive experience with cgroups and CPU throttling effects on JVM quotas within Kubernetes/EKS.
- Proven ability to diagnose and resolve complex concurrency problems at the instruction level.
- Knowledge of AWS infrastructure and its performance characteristics.
- Ability to develop solutions for team- and project-level challenges with medium- and long-term impact.
- Ability to understand system capabilities and limitations, anticipate technical issues, make sound design decisions, and mentor others.
- Previous contribution to OpenJDK or another low-level runtime environment is a significant advantage.
