Staff Software Engineer - Backend

Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership across multiple teams and own the architecture of high-throughput, low-latency backend services.
- Drive distributed-systems architecture decisions covering service boundaries, data modeling, storage, scalability, and performance.
- Lead cross-team technical initiatives and serve as the technical lead for a product line from problem definition through rollout.
- Mentor senior and junior engineers through design reviews, code reviews, pair programming, and technical guidance.
- Design and build Redis-based systems for caching, counters, rate limiting, distributed locking, pub/sub, and streams.
- Build and evolve event-driven and asynchronous systems using Kafka and related streaming patterns.
- Lead the integration of LLM-powered features, agentic workflows, RAG, MCP tool integrations, and AI-assisted development practices.
- Establish engineering standards for API design, code quality, testing, security, privacy, and healthcare compliance.
- Design observability strategies using metrics, logging, tracing, alerting, Grafana, and Prometheus.
- Investigate complex production issues, drive root-cause fixes, lead blameless postmortems, and share knowledge through documentation and technical forums.
Requirements
- 8+ years of backend engineering experience designing and delivering large-scale distributed systems in production.
- Deep expertise in Java 17+ and the Spring ecosystem, including Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, Spring Data, JVM internals, concurrency, and performance tuning.
- Strong experience with Redis data structures, persistence, clustering, and large-scale trade-offs.
- Experience with relational and NoSQL databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, Aerospike, and Cassandra, including query optimization and schema design.
- Experience with Kafka, messaging and streaming systems, and resilient, idempotent event-driven architectures.
- Strong knowledge of microservices, REST/gRPC API design, consistency, partitioning, fault tolerance, and distributed-systems fundamentals.
- Experience with GCP or AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, and owning CI/CD pipelines.
- Working knowledge of LLM APIs, prompt and context engineering, agentic systems, RAG, vector databases, MCP, and AI-system evaluation.
- Hands-on experience using AI coding tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or Cursor.
- Ability to lead technical work across teams, influence architecture without direct authority, mentor senior engineers, and communicate complex trade-offs clearly.
- Experience in ad tech or healthcare data platforms is a plus.
- Production LLM feature experience, including guardrails, cost and latency optimization, and AI-workload observability, is a plus.
- Familiarity with Spark or Flink is a plus.
- Open-source contributions and technical writing or speaking experience are a plus.
