Responsibilities
- Lead complex mainframe application design and development using COBOL, DB2, CICS, VSAM, JCL, and IBM mainframe utilities.
- Oversee batch and online processing flows, including JCL streams and CICS regions, to ensure reliable performance and error handling.
- Translate business requirements into technical specifications involving DB2 schemas, VSAM files, utilities, and COBOL programs.
- Review and optimize COBOL and JCL components for runtime efficiency, resource utilization, and maintainability.
- Assess change impacts across DB2 objects, VSAM datasets, CICS transactions, and scheduling chains.
- Perform root cause analysis for mainframe application incidents and implement corrective actions.
- Implement unit, component, and integration testing for COBOL programs, JCL streams, and CICS transactions.
- Document technical solutions, data flows, operational procedures, and recovery steps.
- Mentor less experienced engineers on mainframe development, code reviews, and troubleshooting.
- Tune DB2 queries, VSAM access patterns, and batch schedules to reduce processing windows.
- Coordinate production releases through deployment plans, rollback strategies, and validation steps.
- Collaborate with quality, security, architecture, and cross-functional stakeholders on compliance and secure coding.
- Identify automation opportunities in mainframe utilities, job scheduling, and monitoring.
Requirements
- Seven to eleven years of experience in IBM mainframe application development and maintenance.
- Strong hands-on experience with COBOL programming, JCL scripting, and IBM mainframe utilities.
- Deep understanding of CICS transactions, programs, maps, and resource definitions.
- Advanced DB2 design, SQL tuning, data modeling, DB2 object management, statistics, and utilities experience.
- Solid knowledge of VSAM keyed and alternate indexes, file organizations, and access methods.
- Experience delivering complex enhancements and production support in large-scale environments.
- Practical exposure to software development life cycles, change management, and defect tracking tools.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders in a hybrid work environment.
