Base Salary

$167k - $242k/yr

Responsibilities

  • Design and build scalable systems, services, and user-facing workflows for Upstart Bank’s platform and operations.
  • Own technical design and delivery for medium-to-large, multi-quarter engineering projects.
  • Translate business, operational, and regulatory requirements into reliable, maintainable software.
  • Improve reliability, performance, observability, and data consistency across distributed services and integrations.
  • Contribute to architecture and design discussions focused on scale, auditability, and maintainability.
  • Partner with product, compliance, operations, and engineering teams to deliver solutions in a regulated environment.
  • Maintain a high engineering bar through implementation, code review, testing, and operational ownership.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field, or equivalent, plus four years of experience.
  • Experience building and operating production software in backend or full-stack environments.
  • Experience building scalable services, APIs, or web applications in cloud environments.
  • Experience owning technical delivery for medium-to-large engineering projects spanning multiple quarters.
  • Proficiency in at least one modern programming language such as Python, Java, or Kotlin.
  • Preferred experience in fintech, banking infrastructure, payments, or other regulated financial systems.
  • Preferred familiarity with distributed systems, event-driven architectures, Kafka, or gRPC.
  • Preferred experience building reliable, auditable systems with strong operational controls.
  • Preferred experience with reporting pipelines, financial data flows, partner integrations, or internal operational tooling.
  • Ability to collaborate with product, compliance, operations, and engineering partners and work effectively in remote or in-person environments.
