Responsibilities

  • Build and own clean, versioned, performant Data API endpoints for internal dashboards, customer-facing features, and third-party tools.
  • Design and optimize PostgreSQL read models, indexes, caching strategies, and future OLAP integrations for low-latency performance.
  • Integrate the serving layer with Kotlin-based product backend services.
  • Own service reliability and performance, including monitoring, incident response, and customer-facing SLOs.
  • Define contracts between data ingestion or aggregation layers and serving databases with Data Engineers.
  • Secure APIs through authentication, authorization, access control, tenant isolation, and row- and column-level permissions with audit trails.
  • Build a near-real-time aggregation service that unifies data across Pleo services.
  • Design metadata, lineage, and governance capabilities for explainable and auditable data serving.

Requirements

  • Strong backend engineering experience building and owning reporting, analytics API, and serving-layer infrastructure.
  • Extensive experience designing API boundaries, endpoint versioning, stable contracts, and downstream abstractions.
  • Expertise in read-heavy system performance, relational database optimization, indexing, materialized views, caching, and API tuning.
  • Strong SQL and database fundamentals across relational and non-relational systems, plus deep Kafka expertise.
  • Deep experience with a JVM-based language, particularly Kotlin or an equivalent language.
  • Experience with AWS or GCP and Kubernetes, including configuring, deploying, and operating containerized applications.
  • Experience bridging data systems and product backend services, including their operational differences.
  • Experience in fintech, payments, or other regulated product environments.
  • Ability to work independently in a hands-on delivery role and define solutions as well as implement them.
  • Experience with API design and development, OLAP systems, and Kotlin is emphasized in the application guidance.
