Base Salary
$225k - $305k/yr
Responsibilities
- Own important software through problem definition, implementation, deployment, and continued operation.
- Translate experimental needs into achievable software milestones with clear acceptance criteria.
- Build and improve interfaces between applications, instrument SDKs, data systems, and infrastructure.
- Solve integration, concurrency, performance, and recovery problems with SDK and application engineers.
- Make decisions about languages, architecture, reuse, and build-versus-buy tradeoffs.
- Establish testing, observability, and release practices that improve reliability and research velocity.
- Build workflows for recording, storing, managing metadata for, and analyzing high-volume experimental data.
- Review code, mentor peers, communicate technical tradeoffs, and help prioritize work with the team manager.
Requirements
- Demonstrated delivery and post-release support of substantial software systems.
- Strong coding, debugging, and software fundamentals with the ability to learn unfamiliar technologies.
- Experience making architecture decisions across multiple components and explaining simplifications and tradeoffs.
- Good judgment regarding reliability, data integrity, performance, and operational failure modes.
- Evidence of helping other engineers deliver through code review, mentoring, and collaboration.
- Helpful but not required: experience with scientific software, robotics, instrumentation, imaging, lab automation, physical systems, Python, C++, Rust, Matlab, scientific data pipelines, high-throughput systems, or desktop applications.
- Previous people management experience or interest in developing people-management skills is helpful but not required.
