Senior Software Engineer, GraphQL - API Platform

Responsibilities

  • Own and evolve the GraphQL API layer supporting search, discovery, checkout, and other critical customer-facing experiences.
  • Design GraphQL schemas and query patterns for flexibility, performance, and reliability at scale.
  • Define and enforce API Platform standards covering schema governance, deprecation, federation, and query complexity controls.
  • Identify and resolve production performance issues such as N+1 patterns, over-fetching, and slow resolvers.
  • Partner with product engineering teams as an internal platform owner to unblock and onboard teams and improve engineering quality.
  • Drive observability through query tracing, latency analysis, and SLA monitoring.
  • Mentor engineers across the organization on GraphQL best practices.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of backend software engineering experience, including at least 3 years focused on GraphQL in production.
  • Deep hands-on GraphQL expertise with schema design, federation such as Apollo Federation, resolvers, dataloader patterns, persisted queries, and query cost analysis.
  • Experience operating high-throughput, customer-facing GraphQL APIs where reliability and latency affect user experience.
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems and designing observable, resilient services that operate under load.
  • Fluency in at least one of Java, Go, or Node.js.
  • Ability to prioritize work and manage stakeholders, with strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Experience mentoring and sharing technical knowledge, along with a proactive and customer-centric mindset.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Preferred qualifications include GraphQL caching experience, internal developer platform or API product experience, e-commerce experience, and startup experience.
