Responsibilities
- Build, improve, deploy, and operate systems for erasure requests, opt-outs, access requests, and objections across Shopify’s platform.
- Own technical problems end-to-end from investigation and design through implementation, production deployment, monitoring, and operational follow-through.
- Write technical designs covering problems, approaches, trade-offs, and implementation plans, and drive stakeholder alignment.
- Champion or contribute to projects, break ambiguous problems into scoped issues, and communicate progress clearly.
- Participate in on-call rotations, respond to incidents, and build observability and alerting.
- Conduct thorough code reviews, share knowledge, mentor teammates, and improve the codebase.
- Coordinate with Identity, Data Platform, Data Governance, Legal, and Compliance teams to resolve cross-team dependencies.
Requirements
- Strong software engineering fundamentals, including building, scaling, and operating production web applications and maintaining high standards for code quality and system design.
- Extreme ownership of problems through resolution, including cleanup, technical debt, and operational follow-through.
- Willingness to work deeply in a Ruby/Rails codebase, even without prior Ruby/Rails experience.
- Genuine curiosity about privacy engineering and its technical challenges.
- Fluency with AI coding tools in daily development workflows, including critically reviewing AI-generated output.
- Preferred: experience with privacy or compliance systems, GDPR/CCPA, or data subject request processing.
- Preferred: experience with BigQuery, BigTable, or large-scale data processing.
- Preferred: familiarity with event-driven architectures using Kafka.
- Preferred: experience working in regulated domains where correctness has legal consequences.
