Responsibilities
- Own architectural direction across a significant portion of the HCM charter, spanning multiple teams and services.
- Identify and resolve technical constraints affecting velocity, reliability, and customer experience.
- Author and shepherd technical strategy documents and architecture decision records.
- Define integration contracts and service boundaries across HCM and adjacent Workforce Solutions platforms.
- Lead modernization and re-platforming strategy, including sequencing, migration paths, and risk management for live systems.
- Own architecture for AI-powered and agentic capabilities, including shared services, context and retrieval patterns, orchestration, and reuse.
- Establish evaluation and quality infrastructure for non-deterministic systems, including evaluations, regression suites, guardrails, fallback behavior, cost and latency budgets, and observability.
- Set responsible AI boundaries for compliance-sensitive workflows and improve AI engineering practices across the charter.
- Mentor senior and staff-track engineers, conduct design reviews, unblock teams, and raise engineering standards.
- Drive systemic improvements in reliability, latency, security posture, operational toil, testing, CI/CD, and operational readiness.
- Serve as a senior escalation point for complex cross-team incidents and drive root-cause resolution.
- Ensure systems meet standards for security, privacy, data governance, and multi-jurisdiction regulatory compliance.
- Contribute to hiring, leveling calibration, and technical assessment of senior and staff candidates.
- Remain hands-on through prototypes, reference implementations, foundational components, and critical-path engineering.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- At least 8 years of professional software engineering experience building and operating production systems at scale.
- Demonstrated Staff-level or equivalent experience setting technical direction across multiple teams.
- Deep expertise in distributed systems design, service architecture, API design, and data modeling across relational and non-relational stores.
- Production depth in a modern backend language such as Java, Kotlin, Go, Python, Ruby, or Node.js, with working knowledge of a modern frontend framework, ideally React.
- Extensive experience with cloud infrastructure such as AWS or GCP, containerization, orchestration, and CI/CD at scale.
- Substantive production experience building AI systems such as LLM-backed features, retrieval-augmented architectures, or agentic workflows, including quality, evaluation, and operational ownership.
- Evidence of using AI-first engineering practices to shift how a team or organization works.
- Track record of leading large technical initiatives through influence rather than authority.
- Excellent technical writing, including design or strategy documents that drove organizational decisions.
- Proven ability to mentor and grow senior engineers.
- Preferred: experience in HR technology, payroll, workforce management, fintech, or other auditable and financially material domains.
- Preferred: experience with rules engines, calculation or ledger-style systems, configurable workflow platforms, live legacy-system modernization, shared AI platforms, evaluation infrastructure, technical governance, frontend architecture, or large matrixed organizations.
- Preferred: familiarity with SOC 2, GDPR, PIPEDA, CCPA, and jurisdictional employment reporting requirements.
- Preferred: prior Staff or Principal experience at a mid-to-large technology company.
Benefits
- Competitive compensation package with pay-for-performance rewards.
- Position may be eligible for a cash bonus, equity rewards, and benefits under applicable plans and programs.
