Responsibilities
- Own reference database architecture, including instance design, replication topology, parameter tuning, connection management, and query plan health.
- Govern schema conventions across programs and build reusable backup, restore, disaster-recovery, and zero-downtime migration tooling.
- Define database security patterns within FedRAMP boundaries, including encryption, least-privilege access, and audit logging.
- Partner with Platform Engineering and Data Engineering on shared infrastructure and production-to-analytics integration.
- Support program teams, provide portfolio-wide database escalation on-call, and discuss data residency, retention, encryption, and access with customers.
Requirements
- 5+ years of production database engineering at scale with a major relational engine, preferably PostgreSQL or alternatively Aurora, MySQL, or Oracle.
- Strong query-plan literacy, including the ability to read EXPLAIN ANALYZE without a profiler, and production experience with zero-downtime schema migrations.
- Production experience with an OLAP or analytics store such as Redshift, Snowflake, BigQuery, or ClickHouse.
- Production AWS experience, particularly with RDS or Aurora, plus hands-on experience inside a FedRAMP Moderate or High boundary.
- Experience creating database patterns, tooling, or standards used by teams beyond one’s own and familiarity with database participation in an ATO continuous-monitoring cycle.
- Strong customer-facing communication about data residency, retention, and encryption, and the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance.
- Preferred qualifications include row-store and column-store experience, PostgreSQL logical replication, AWS DMS, vector storage, federal-grade database security tooling, PostGIS or other spatial extensions, and IL5, IL6, or JWICS experience.
