Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain production firmware for ESP32-based connected devices using ESP-IDF.
- Bring up new hardware and integrate drivers for sensors, actuators, LEDs, and other peripherals.
- Implement BLE provisioning, Wi-Fi connectivity, secure AWS IoT Core communication over MQTT, and device state synchronization.
- Build and maintain OTA update mechanisms with rollback and staged rollout capabilities.
- Debug firmware, hardware, wireless, cloud, protocol, provisioning, and interoperability issues through production.
- Collaborate with hardware engineers, contract manufacturers, mobile teams, backend teams, and other cross-functional partners.
- Support factory flashing, device provisioning, EVT/DVT/PVT hardware builds, FCC certification, and production readiness.
- Contribute to firmware CI/CD, test tooling, automated test harnesses, telemetry, device data models, and technical documentation.
Requirements
- 5–8 years of professional embedded or firmware engineering experience.
- Strong C/C++ experience with Espressif ESP32 platforms and ESP-IDF, including RTOS-based development, OTA mechanisms, low-level driver integration, and production deployment.
- Hands-on firmware development experience with BLE, Wi-Fi, wireless communication stacks, provisioning flows, and connected-device interoperability.
- Experience connecting devices to cloud IoT platforms such as AWS IoT Core using MQTT over TLS, certificate-based authentication, and device state synchronization.
- Experience integrating sensors, actuators, RFID readers, accelerometers, motion sensors, LEDs, pumps, and other peripherals.
- Ability to read technical specifications and translate them into production-quality firmware implementations.
- Preferred experience contributing to ESP-IDF or nRF Connect SDK open-source projects and using Nordic nRF-series platforms with nRF Connect SDK.
- Preferred familiarity with Thread, Zigbee, Z-Wave, BLE Mesh, Protocol Buffers, embedded security, secure boot, flash encryption, key management, device attestation, and secure firmware updates.
- Preferred experience with JTAG/SWD, logic analyzers, protocol sniffers, firmware CI/CD, automated test harnesses, OTA rollout strategies, contract manufacturing, FCC certification, and EVT/DVT/PVT builds.
- Preferred experience working in a consultancy or product development firm across multiple product lines and using Python for test tooling and device automation.

- Base compensation is $135,000 USD, commensurate with experience, with variable compensation of up to a 10% annual performance bonus.
