Responsibilities
- Serve as the key technical architect across multiple client engagements and align technical strategy with business goals.
- Lead architecture design across frontend, backend, and cloud layers for scalable, maintainable, and high-performing systems.
- Contribute production-ready code, initially focused on Java backend services and Dropwizard.
- Collaborate with Hardware, Data Science, Design, Product Managers, Technical Leads, commercial teams, sales, and client success.
- Support pre-sales through technical scoping, estimation, and Statements of Work.
- Establish standards for coding, testing, documentation, deployment, and delivery quality.
- Develop and manage deployments, automated tests, CI/CD pipelines, logging, monitoring, alerting, and observability.
- Identify and mitigate architectural, delivery, and project-health risks.
- Lead code reviews, mentor junior engineers, and guide teams through development and 24/7 on-call rotations.
- Diagnose and resolve production issues and maintain public-facing systems at scale.
- Contribute to recruitment, onboarding, and development of engineering talent.
- Represent Very in client meetings and industry events as a subject-matter expert.
- Lead at least two concurrent full-stack client projects toward successful, on-time delivery.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
- 10+ years of professional software development experience.
- At least three years in a technical leadership role overseeing cross-functional engineering teams.
- Professional backend development experience with Java or another modern object-oriented language; Java and Dropwizard experience are preferred.
- Demonstrated success delivering full-stack systems from concept through production.
- Experience leading complex projects involving platform, backend, and frontend development.
- Experience maintaining public-facing production systems at scale.
- Strong frontend experience with React, Expo, Vite, and TypeScript.
- Experience with relational and non-relational data modeling.
- Extensive experience building and supporting event-driven cloud platforms in AWS and Azure, including security, logging, monitoring, observability, and performance at scale.
- High proficiency with GitHub Actions for CI/CD automation and Terraform or Pulumi for infrastructure as code.
- Strong client-facing communication, executive presentation, technical leadership, and risk-management skills.
- Professional services or consulting experience is strongly preferred.
- Must reside in the United States and be a US citizen.

- Compensation of USD $100 per hour, commensurate with experience.
