Senior Backend Engineer (Data Platform)
Bluefish AIResponsibilities
- Design and build production-grade backend services and data pipelines from ingestion through downstream consumption.
- Design and operate reliable APIs, exports, and delivery mechanisms for external customers.
- Make architectural decisions that balance cost, reliability, and throughput across distributed systems.
- Build resilient infrastructure with retries, backoff strategies, dead-letter handling, and failure recovery.
- Implement end-to-end observability through structured logging, metrics, alerting, and on-call operations.
- Collaborate with data engineers and product teams to integrate new data sources and support platform needs.
- Set technical direction and improve code quality, testing, and system design.
- Mentor engineers and raise the technical bar across the team.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience building and operating production backend or data platform systems.
- Strong fundamentals in distributed systems, event-driven architectures, asynchronous processing, and message queues.
- Experience with AWS services including SQS, SNS, Kafka, Lambda, ECS, S3, and EventBridge.
- Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases, including PostgreSQL and DynamoDB.
- Experience designing systems with robust error handling, idempotency, and reliable delivery guarantees.
- Proficiency in both Python and TypeScript.
- Experience mentoring mid-level and junior engineers and raising technical standards across a team.
- Preferred experience with pipeline orchestration, web scraping or large-scale data acquisition, vector databases, ML-adjacent infrastructure, and big data.
- Preferred infrastructure-as-code experience with Terraform.
- Ability to partner with product, AI, BI, and data science teams on data platform decisions.
- Experience collaborating across time zones and establishing effective practices for distributed teams.
