Senior Software Engineer, System Orchestration

Responsibilities

  • Own device controllers end to end, including API design, implementation, rollout, and operational health.
  • Build services that remain robust when physical instruments and dependent systems fail.
  • Migrate devices to the current framework and roll changes out across the fleet without disrupting running experiments.
  • Improve shared orchestration frameworks when issues affect multiple controllers.
  • Work with systems teams, scientists, operators, and other software teams that depend on the services.
  • Strengthen observability, health checking, and alerting.
  • Review code and help less experienced engineers develop while remaining hands-on.

Requirements

  • Experience building stateful services that remain correct under failure and changing load-bearing systems while users depend on them.
  • Strong systems engineering skills, with Rust experience or deep proficiency in another systems language and willingness to work in Rust, including asynchronous programming.
  • Experience designing and operating networked services such as gRPC or REST, including error handling, observability, and failure modes.
  • Experience using a relational database as a source of truth, including schema design, live-data migrations, and transactions; the team uses PostgreSQL.
  • Experience with state machines, timeouts, leases, retries, lifecycle management, and concurrency.
  • Experience with a scheduler, workflow engine, job queue, or event-driven system, such as Temporal, Airflow, Celery, or Slurm.
  • Ability to document and evaluate design alternatives, own production behavior, communicate across disciplines, and support other engineers.
  • Additional useful experience includes production containerized services, Kubernetes, distributed tracing, closed-loop systems, and scientific computing or research facilities.
