Responsibilities

  • Build, operate, and evolve backend authentication services, including their APIs, data models, caching, consistency behavior, and failure handling.
  • Design and execute phased authentication migration workstreams from the legacy Perl stack to Auth0, including coexistence, dual-write, reconciliation, staged rollout, and rollback strategies.
  • Read, debug, and safely modify long-lived Perl services carrying live production authentication traffic.
  • Configure and extend Auth0 authentication and authorization behavior, including tenants, applications, custom pipeline logic, connections, directories, tokens, and sessions.
  • Investigate login-path incidents and anomalies across services, identity providers, edge infrastructure, and partner integrations, driving issues to root cause.
  • Instrument authentication flows, define login-health metrics, and run controlled experiments on real traffic.
  • Support internal engineers and downstream consumers through technical guidance, design reviews, integration support, and identity-domain education.
  • Participate in on-call for services with direct partner-visible impact.

Requirements

  • Professional backend engineering experience building and operating production services at scale in Java and Perl.
  • Hands-on experience delivering customer identity and access management for external, non-employee populations.
  • Practical, in-depth production experience with Auth0, including configuration, custom authentication logic, connection and user-store strategy, token design, and session design.
  • Experience migrating authentication from an incumbent system to a new identity provider on live traffic, including user or credential migration, staged rollout, coexistence, and rollback.
  • Experience working productively in large legacy codebases; working knowledge of Perl is required.
  • Strong debugging-level knowledge of OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, JWT, and session management.
  • Production cloud-service ownership experience covering deployment, observability, alerting, and incident response.
  • Ability to independently investigate production problems spanning multiple systems and organizational boundaries.
  • Clear written and spoken English, including incident reports, design documents, and explanations of identity concepts.
  • Preferred experience with controlled experimentation on authentication or funnel-critical paths.
  • Preferred familiarity with bot, automation, and abuse traffic affecting login endpoints and success metrics.
  • Preferred experience with mobile authentication, including native app OIDC flows, token lifecycles, biometric credentials, or device-bound credentials.
  • Preferred exposure to AI-assisted engineering workflows and agentic software-development tooling.
  • Preferred experience with machine-to-machine and API authentication for third-party integrators.

Benefits

  • Annual paid time off and generous paid leave, including parent, grandparent, bereavement, and care leave.
  • Hybrid work with flexible arrangements and up to 20 days per year working from abroad in the home country.
  • Industry-leading Booking.com product discounts of up to 1400 per year, including automatic Genius Level 3 status and Booking.com wallet credit.
  • Relocation support is not provided for this role.
