Responsibilities
- Own backend and infrastructure architecture and document key technical decisions.
- Define engineering standards for backend code, infrastructure, security, and deployment.
- Design, build, and maintain backend services and REST and GraphQL APIs using Python and PHP.
- Design and integrate authentication and SSO using OAuth 2, OpenID Connect, SAML, and Microsoft Entra ID.
- Lead database design and query optimization.
- Design, deploy, and maintain primarily GCP-based cloud infrastructure.
- Build and manage Docker-based containerized environments and CI/CD pipelines.
- Implement monitoring, logging, alerting, incident response, backups, disaster recovery, and infrastructure-as-code practices.
- Support front-end deployments and headless solutions involving Contentful and Vercel.
- Advise leadership, delivery teams, clients, and stakeholders on technical approach, risk, effort, and cost.
- Share knowledge, mentor engineers, and lead technical initiatives.
Requirements
- 5–7 years of senior-level backend development experience.
- Strong commercial experience with Python and PHP.
- Strong hands-on experience with a major cloud provider such as GCP, AWS, or Azure, ideally GCP.
- Practical experience with Docker and containerized application deployment.
- Strong understanding of CI/CD and modern DevOps practices.
- Hands-on experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation.
- Knowledge of cloud security best practices, relational and/or NoSQL databases, and REST and GraphQL APIs.
- Experience implementing SSO and authentication with OAuth 2, OpenID Connect, SAML, and identity platforms such as Microsoft Entra ID.
- Experience collaborating with front-end developers on headless solutions and CMS platforms such as Contentful.
- Experience across the software lifecycle from design through deployment and monitoring.
- Ability to work autonomously as the owner of a technical area and explain technical decisions to non-technical stakeholders and clients.
- Desirable experience with Vercel, Kubernetes or other container orchestration, agency or client-facing work, technical scoping and estimation, pitches, mentoring, or technical leadership.
