Responsibilities
- Lead software architecture and modernization of legacy applications into domain-oriented software.
- Define target architectures, module and service boundaries, migration seams, compatibility strategies, and incremental implementation paths.
- Contribute directly to critical code, prototypes, refactoring, code reviews, configuration, instrumentation, and production fixes.
- Design domain models, service contracts, APIs, persistence, transaction, caching, messaging, and event-consumer patterns.
- Guide framework and runtime upgrades, dependency modernization, concurrency improvements, lifecycle improvements, and decomposition of tightly coupled code.
- Diagnose and fix root causes involving application behavior, database interactions, dependency flows, concurrency, performance, resource contention, failure propagation, and recovery.
- Establish stronger unit, integration, contract, and functional testing, code review, static analysis, dependency management, feature controls, and validation practices.
- Create reusable engineering patterns, reference implementations, libraries, and architecture decisions.
- Translate architectural risk into code-level priorities, ownership, decisions, and sequenced implementation plans.
- Partner with engineering, product, security, and data teams to execute complex software initiatives.
- Develop repeatable uses of AI-assisted engineering for code comprehension, design, implementation, refactoring, testing, debugging, documentation, and planning.
Requirements
- Substantial experience designing, building, operating, and evolving production backend systems, services, APIs, and distributed applications.
- Deep hands-on implementation experience, including the ability to move from architecture into code, configuration, instrumentation, and diagnosis.
- Experience with Java/Spring Boot, Golang, Node.js/TypeScript, or similar backend ecosystems.
- Experience defining service boundaries, domain ownership, migration strategies, integration patterns, and practical architecture decisions in complex existing environments.
- Expertise in production reliability, performance, concurrency, recovery behavior, database interactions, and runtime diagnosis.
- Strong software design and refactoring experience with large codebases, modular design, dependency management, incremental refactoring, and domain modeling.
- Understanding of relational databases, SQL behavior, messaging, event consumers, data movement, caching, and legacy data dependencies.
- Strong automated testing, code review, static analysis, dependency health, secure coding, and production validation discipline.
- Principal-level technical leadership, including cross-team communication, constructive challenge, risk communication, and decision facilitation.
- Opportunity-focused approach to AI-assisted engineering and experience or interest in applying AI to code analysis, design, implementation, testing, debugging, documentation, and planning.
- Bonus experience modernizing large software systems, upgrading runtimes and frameworks, decomposing monoliths, extracting services, or creating modular boundaries.
- Bonus experience with Oracle, Kafka, complex data migrations or reporting dependencies, profiling, runtime instrumentation, concurrency analysis, database-performance diagnosis, or AI coding agents.
