$385k - $490k/yr
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and scale backend services and APIs for OpenAI's products.
- Lead the architecture of distributed systems and databases for high-reliability workloads.
- Own major platform capabilities from strategy to long-term operation.
- Shape API design to enhance developer experience.
- Build secure and compliant systems for enterprise and developer use cases.
- Collaborate with product, research, and engineering teams to implement new capabilities.
- Drive technical direction and make architectural tradeoffs.
- Improve engineering velocity through internal tooling and platform abstractions.
- Raise engineering quality and operational excellence across teams.
- Identify and solve complex technical problems across multiple systems.
Requirements
- Significant experience in building and scaling production backend systems.
- Deep expertise in software engineering fundamentals and distributed systems.
- Proficiency in backend languages such as Python, Go, Rust, or TypeScript.
- Track record of leading complex technical initiatives.
- Strong focus on reliability, safety, security, and performance.
- High standards for developer experience and interface design.
- Ability to work in ambiguous, fast-moving environments.
- Ownership of problems and eagerness to learn.
- Strong judgment and clear communication skills.
- Experience as a founder or early engineer at a startup is a plus.
