Responsibilities
- Guide engineering practices across multiple teams, advocate for technologies and tooling, and establish portfolio-wide architectural direction.
- Contribute to the design of highly scalable, reliable, and performant cloud-native applications and guide automation, performance, operational health, and deployment pipelines.
- Promote organization-wide quality standards and guide teams in defining and implementing SLOs and embedding security and data guidelines across systems.
- Prevent production issues through robust tooling and engineering practices, participate in the on-call rotation, and help refocus projects when needed.
- Shape DevOps culture, establish frameworks to quantify technical debt, and drive strategic technical debt reduction.
- Mentor and coach engineers at all levels, including Lead Engineers, while fostering a high-performing and inclusive environment.
- Participate in interviewing, engage with the external technology community, and represent Xero's engineering brand.
Requirements
- Extensive experience leading large, complex technical initiatives to delivery on cloud-native platforms, including scaling for performance and reliability.
- Outstanding communication skills for explaining complex technical concepts to engineering teams and senior executive leaders.
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to long-term technical roadmaps and align engineering delivery with broader business strategy.
- Strong problem-solving skills, including deconstructing complex challenges and navigating technical trade-offs.
- Proven ability to implement frameworks for quantifying technical debt and prioritizing remediation alongside feature delivery.
- Commitment to coaching engineers, improving delivery practices, and fostering an inclusive, psychologically safe, and collaborative engineering culture.
