Staff Software Engineer, Orders Pricing

$151k - $309k/yr
Responsibilities
- Align the pricing engine’s technical vision and roadmap with Toast’s strategy and expansion into new verticals.
- Lead the design and delivery of significant products and core capabilities spanning multiple teams.
- Serve as the domain expert for pricing rules involving discounts, taxes, and service charges.
- Drive architectural decisions for correctness, performance, and scale, and author and review technical designs.
- Mentor engineers, grow technical leaders, and raise engineering standards across the Orders organization.
- Identify and address systemic gaps in tooling, testing, and delivery practices.
- Set standards for observability, alerting, incident response, operational excellence, and production availability.
- Partner with Product, QA, and engineering leadership to prioritize work and resolve tradeoffs.
- Champion effective use of AI-assisted development across the team.
Requirements
- 8+ years of backend experience.
- Track record of delivering significant products or core capabilities across multiple teams.
- Deep experience designing and operating distributed systems, enterprise messaging systems, and microservices at scale.
- Expertise with modern web standards and API technologies such as REST and GraphQL, including schema design, evolution, and versioning.
- Experience owning business-critical production services, leading incident response, and driving long-term reliability improvements.
- Strong experience with relational databases and alternative data stores, including data modeling and migrations at scale.
- Proven ability to mentor engineers and multiply team effectiveness.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build alignment and explain complex tradeoffs.
- Preferred experience with pricing, tax, payments, or other correctness-critical commerce systems.
