
Senior Software Engineer - AI Operations Team (Open to hiring at the Lead Software Engineer Level)

Responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate governed AI platform capabilities including model routing, prompt management, agent orchestration, runtime services, tool execution, retrieval, evaluation, observability, guardrails, and cost management.
- Guide engineers through complex design, development, testing, debugging, root-cause analysis, and issue resolution.
- Drive adoption of architecture standards, automated testing, CI/CD practices, reusable SDKs, infrastructure-as-code, templates, and reference implementations.
- Implement AI knowledge retrieval, evaluation, monitoring, security, auditability, compliance, lineage, traceability, and operational governance capabilities.
- Mentor engineers and partner with technology areas to develop and implement solutions and new or enhanced applications.
- Use AWS, infrastructure, labor, and other cost measures to support decisions, consensus, delivery, and benefits realization.
- Consult with Wellmark leaders on business status, issues, process improvements, technology enhancements, and capabilities.
- Participate in project proposals, estimates, proof-of-concept activities, industry groups, and technology best-practice efforts.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, MIS, or a related field plus at least 2 years of software development experience, or 6 years of related and applicable experience.
- Strong software development experience and understanding of software development lifecycle methodologies.
- Preferred experience with TypeScript, Node.js, Python, AWS cloud services, and Azure AI capabilities.
- Preferred experience building AI platform capabilities such as model routing, prompt management, agent orchestration, agent runtimes, tool integration, and AI governance controls.
- Preferred experience with embeddings, vector indexing, semantic search, citation frameworks, and retrieval-augmented generation patterns.
- Preferred experience creating reusable SDKs, APIs, templates, reference implementations, platform services, and developer self-service capabilities.
- Preferred knowledge of identity, authentication, authorization, privacy, security controls, enterprise guardrails, compliance, auditability, lineage, traceability, and evidence capture.
- Preferred experience with observability, AI quality evaluation, performance metrics, cost attribution, model and workload optimization, and automated quality measurement frameworks.
- Strong analytical problem-solving, research, root-cause analysis, solution-design, troubleshooting, and technical decision-making skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively, build relationships, mentor and coach team members, collaborate across diverse teams, manage priorities, and work in a fast-paced environment.
