Responsibilities
- Build and improve systems for data erasure requests, opt-outs, access requests, objections, and privacy processing across Shopify’s platform.
- Own problems end-to-end from issue identification and technical design through implementation, deployment, monitoring, and operational follow-through.
- Document technical designs, trade-offs, and implementation plans and drive stakeholder alignment.
- Drive or contribute to projects, break ambiguous problems into actionable issues, and communicate progress.
- Participate in on-call rotations, respond to incidents, and build observability and alerting.
- Conduct thorough code reviews, share knowledge, mentor teammates, and improve the codebase.
- Coordinate with Identity, Data Platform, Data Governance, Legal, and Compliance across organizational boundaries.
Requirements
- Strong software engineering fundamentals and experience building, scaling, and operating production web applications.
- Extreme ownership of problems through resolution, including cleanup, technical debt, and operational follow-through.
- Willingness to work deeply in a Ruby/Rails codebase.
- Genuine interest in the technical challenges of the privacy domain.
- Fluency with AI coding tools in daily development and ability to rigorously review AI-generated output.
- Experience with privacy or compliance systems, GDPR/CCPA, or data subject request processing is a nice-to-have.
- Experience with BigQuery, BigTable, or large-scale data processing is a nice-to-have.
- Familiarity with event-driven architectures and Kafka is a nice-to-have.
- Experience in regulated domains where correctness has legal consequences is a nice-to-have.
