Responsibilities
- Define and own the technical architecture for the Identity squad’s authentication systems, including the edge authentication redesign.
- Lead the design and implementation of large-scale, multi-quarter initiatives spanning multiple services and teams.
- Spend approximately 55% of the role on backend development in Golang, 25% on technical leadership and cross-team collaboration, and 20% on operations and reliability.
- Serve as Grafana’s technical authority for OAuth, OIDC, SAML, LDAP, and SCIM identity protocols.
- Drive cross-team alignment on authentication standards, patterns, and engineering best practices.
- Mentor and develop senior engineers through technical guidance, design feedback, and career support.
- Represent Grafana Labs at meetups and conferences and contribute to the identity and authentication community.
Requirements
- Deep expertise in distributed systems engineering with Go and experience owning large-scale production systems end-to-end.
- Demonstrated ability to define technical direction and make architectural decisions with impact beyond the immediate team.
- Extensive experience building and operating low-latency, high-throughput services in distributed, multi-tenant environments.
- Proven experience leading complex, multi-quarter initiatives across multiple teams or systems.
- Ability to mentor and develop senior engineers.
- Strong understanding of SLOs, SLIs, error budgets, reliability, security, and product velocity tradeoffs.
- Excellent written and verbal English communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
- Expert understanding of modern identity standards and threat models, including OAuth 2.x/2.1, OIDC, and SAML.
- Familiarity with Kubernetes is a bonus.
- TypeScript and React experience is a bonus.
- Experience with OpenFGA and KiFederate IDP is a bonus.
- Experience in security-critical environments is a bonus.
- Open-source contribution or maintenance experience is a bonus.
- Familiarity with Grafana, Prometheus, or OpenTelemetry is a bonus.
